Love them or hate them, you have to admire the sheer nerve of the herring gull. They’re pushy, noisy scavengers, eager to shove their beaks into disgusting rubbish heaps and bin bags, and they shit all over the place. On the ground, they look comical, with their skinny legs and big flappy feet. But in the air, they have the grace that all birds possess when they’re in flight. Apparently, according to the RSPB, the population of the herring gull is decreasing in the UK – hard to believe in Worthing at the moment, when every rooftop seems to be packed with breeding birds and their squeaking, fluffy chicks. Good luck to them, I say – as long as they don’t shit on me.
